Setting

Our Autism Resource Base is a dedicated unit, within our mainstream school designed to support the individual needs of autistic students. It consists of two specialised classes, each accommodating up to five children, supported by one teacher and two teaching assistants (On rare occasions, depending on the individual cohort of children, the classes may be split with 6 children in one class and 4 in the other). These classes are thoughtfully arranged according to the children's ages and the curriculum that best suits their learning needs: either formal or informal. The formal curriculum is tailored for students who thrive with structured, academic-focused learning, while the informal curriculum caters to students who benefit from a more flexible, sensory, and play-based approach.

Learning at the Village
kjhkjhk
The Village is a special provision for autistic children that fosters a positive, inclusive, and caring environment. We believe in understanding and accepting each child for their unique strengths and challenges. Our goal is to equip them with the tools they need to navigate the world around them, and reach their full potential.

The Village boasts two dedicated classrooms, Willow and Sycamore. These classrooms foster a sense of connection and potential for future integration within the wider school environment. Each classroom is led by a dedicated teacher and supported by a team of teaching assistants who are all committed to ongoing learning about autism approaches.

We understand that autistic students have a variety of learning styles. Our classrooms are designed to be low-arousal environments with visual supports, focused learning areas, and sensory equipment to promote self-regulation. We use a range of evidence-based approaches, including SCERTS, PECS, Colourful Semantics, Attention Autism, and TEEACH, to find what works best for each individual.

The Village follows the mainstream curriculum as closely as possible, while adapting it to meet the specific needs of our students. This allows for opportunities to integrate with mainstream classes for subjects like Art, Music, and PE when appropriate. Students may also participate in other subjects on an individual basis, returning to The Village classroom to solidify their understanding at their own pace.

Social interaction and inclusion are important aspects of the Village. When possible, and according to individual needs, students play and eat together, participate in school assemblies, and join exciting school trips and projects. We also encourage independence by regularly venturing into the community to equip students with practical skills and prepare them for their transition to secondary school.

With the support of Speech and Language Therapists and Occupational Therapists, we employ evidence-based interventions to nurture social, language, and academic skills in our smaller class sizes. We recognise that we are constantly learning, and we are committed to providing a nurturing and supportive environment where autistic children can thrive.
