Symptoms of coronavirus in children

The main symptoms of coronavirus are:

  • a high temperature
  • a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot, for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours
  • a loss or change to sense of smell or taste – this means they cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

What to do if my child has COVID symptoms?

If your child has any of the main symptoms of coronavirus (even if they are very mild):

  1. Your child must stay at home and self-isolate.  Please do not send your child to school with COVID symptoms, even if they are very mild.
  2. Get your child tested.  It is advisable that everyone else in the household also takes a test.

Which test do I need?

For symptomatic cases, a PCR test must be taken.  Lateral flow tests are only for people who do not have symptoms.  If you've been in close contact with someone who's tested positive for COVID-19 you can get a PCR test, whether or not you have symptoms.

What happens if the test is positive?

Your child will need to self-isolate as per the NHS self–isolation guidance.  Please inform school as soon as possible.  The school still has a duty to report all its positive cases.  If the number of cases in the school reaches a particular threshold, the school will action its COVID Contingency Plan.

If a child in my child’s class has had a confirmed test result, does the rest of the class need to self-isolate?

Children under 16 years old no longer need to self-isolate, unless they have symptoms or have a positive test result.

Does my child need to test 2x weekly using a Lateral Flow Test?

No - currently only children attending secondary school need to test on a regular basis.

Does my child need to wear a face covering in school?

No - currently only children in secondary schools need to wear face coverings in school.  However, if you do want your child to wear a face covering in school please inform your child’s class teacher.
